They’ve just thrown fruit and some carrots in the cart and Colleen’s crossing out items on her list when her brow furrows.

“What’s wrong?” Danny asks - he doesn’t know what could go wrong with buying groceries, but she’s doing all the work after all.

“They changed everything since last time I came here,” she sighs.

“What? Why?”

“It’s some kind of way to get you to buy stuff. If you have to look for cereal all over again then you’ll see things you might have skipped if you went straight to buy your usual food. Argh, listen, do you think we can split?”

“Uh, sure? What do you mean?”

She tears the list in half and hands one piece to him. “Just get the things on here, I’ll get these. Like this we’ll be through faster.”

“Uh, all right,” he agrees. She hands him the basket she had on her arm while she takes the cart, kisses him on the cheek and dashes off to what looks like the milk aisle.

Well then. Time to buy groceries, Danny thinks. He looks at the list. It reads sugar first, and he finds it easily enough - he grabs the cheapest pack, figuring that it’s all the same thing. When it comes to tea, Colleen wrote down the brand so it’s not too complicated either, and then there’s eggs. He goes to look for them and grabs the first packet he sees - okay. Three on three. If he goes on like this, he’ll be done in fifteen minutes at most.

He goes on to the fourth item -

Cereal.

Okay. Can’t be that complicated now, can it? He follows the directions and he arrives at the cereal aisle -

And there he just stops dead in his tracks, because the times he’s been over for breakfast at the dojo he hadn’t gotten cereal, he was fine with tea, and he hadn’t noticed what brand Colleen got and since he hasn’t eaten any of it he doesn’t know what she usually gets. And the entire aisle is just - too much fucking cereal. He had no idea there were this many brands. It takes half of the hallway, there’s six shelves of them, and every shelf has six different brands on it at least. How the hell is he even supposed to pick one? He stares at the whole thing feeling utterly helpless, and a few people passing by in a hurry run into him and mutter something about weirdos not being able to move out of the way, and shit, what does he even do, what if he picks the first that sounds good but Colleen doesn’t like it, how does he even know if it’s good when he hasn’t eaten cereal in years -

“Would you be so kind to help me out?”

The question throws him out of that train of thought, thankfully, and he turns to look at his unknowing savior. It’s a young man, dressed in a nice suit, a few years older than him but not that much -

And he has dark glasses and a cane in his hand.

“Oh, of course,” Danny replies at once. “How?”

“Thanks. It’s, uh, I usually navigate this place fairly well, but they switched the places for everything.”

“I’ve noticed,” Danny lies.

“And, this is the cereal aisle, right?”

“Yeah. I guess you don’t know where yours is anymore?”

“That’d be it. If you can tell me where it is I’ll just get it myself so I know where to find it.”

“Oh. Of course. What’s the brand?”

“Cinnamon Toast Crunch,” the man answers.

Danny scans the shelves, thankful that he has something to look for, and locates it not long later.

“Uhm, okay, you need to step ahead until you’re in front of the shelf. That’s like, the third shelf just in front of you. It’s below that, on the second, just to the left.”

The man follows the instructions and grabs a box. “Did I get it right?”

“Yeah, that’s it.”

“Thanks, man. I’d have asked the people at the check-out but at the fourth question the sounded about to murder me.”

“Hey, it’s their job. Anyway, no problem - uh, I’m Danny, by the way.”

“Oh. Matt. Nice to meet you.” The man has a nice, firm grip, Danny notices, and he’s just glad that... this went well? Like normal meetings between people go?

“Likewise. And uh, is that cereal any good?”

“Well, it’s my favorite. Why, you want to switch it up?”

“I might,” Danny replies. “Well, have a good day.”

“Same to you.”

Matt leaves and Danny just grabs a box of the same cereal - it doesn’t sound disgusting, at least.

By the time he finds Colleen again, he has managed the rest without too many problems and mainly just grabbing the first item he saw.

“Uh, is this okay? For the cereal, I mean,” he asks her as they go in line.

“Oh, I haven’t had it in years,” she says, moving against his side, “but I liked it a lot back in the day. Damn, I forgot to write the brand, did I?”

“It’s - it’s fine, someone recommended them to me.”

“Well, then he had good taste.”

That’s when Danny sees the blind man - Matt - giving him a thumbs-up from the next check out line.

Right. Blind people have better hearing than most, he probably overheard it. He doesn’t do the same because the guy wouldn’t see it, but he decides that if they ever run into each other again he’ll buy the guy a beer or something.

A few months later

“Hey, I owe you a beer.”

“Sorry?”

“We met each other before. In that supermarket, when you were looking for cereal.”

“... That was why you sounded familiar, wasn’t it?”

“Yeah, well, you kind of saved my ass there and my girlfriend loved that brand, too, and I had no clue of what i should buy. I told myself I’d buy you a beer if I ever ran into you again, and -”

“Well, I’m sure Jessica does know a bar.”

“... She looks like she would. So, you’re okay with doing that now?”

5.) Did you grow up eating dinner with your family? How do you think that affected you? It was like 50/50 sometimes we would eat together, and sometimes we would eat wherever. I don’t really know how it affected me???

6.) Do you have “nice” dinner plates for special occasions? No

7.) Do you ever eat frozen dinners? Not unless it’s literally all we have I hate them 

8.) What dinner foods can you cook? I cannot 

9.) White or red meat (or their vegetarian substitute counterparts)? I don’t have a preference

Dessert! 1.) Do you ever get dessert at a restaurant when they ask? Not usually, but I always want it :\\\

2.) Is there a dessert food most people like that you hate? I don’t like cake 

3.) Cupcakes or real cake? Cupcakes 

4.) Ice cream or pie? Pie 

5.) What kind of birthday cake (or other sweet birthday type thing) do you usually get? Cheesecake 

6.) What was your favorite childhood birthday cake? I don’t really like cake but probably an ice cream cake 

7.) Do you have a favorite foreign (to a Westerner, anyway :P) desserts? (Baklava, biscotti, churros…) I like churros 

8.) Do you bake sweets? Which are you best at? I love baking that’s one thing I can do decently 

9.) Have you ever had a good “diet” dessert, like something endorsed by Weight Watchers? What was it? I doubt it :)

3.) Is there anything you find yourself eating when you’re bored? Anything and everything

5.) What’s your favorite food that’s usually served at parties? I have never been to a party so I don’t know 

6.) Do you eat in class? If so, what is it, usually? Not usually, but if I do it’ll be something easy like pretzels

Food in general! 1.) Do you buy generic brand food? If it’s generic food like bread or milk I’ll get generic, but I prefer to buy name brand 

2.) Is there a common food you find repulsive? Probably but I can’t think of any?????

3.) What’s your favorite “ethnic” cuisine? Chinese

4.) If you were stranded in a zombie apocalypse with only a full, run-of-the-mill and full-of-junk vending machine for food, which items would you eat first? Cheese puffs or sour patch kids 

5.) Are you a candy fanatic? It depends on what kind of candy

9.) Do you think being a vegan would be/is really hard? It wouldn’t be easy, but I could do it

14.) Does mayonnaise disgust you? I LOVE MAYONNAISE BUT YES IT DISGUSTS ME
